Intercity Transit Pilots NaviLens at Olympia and Lacey Transit Centers
Aims to Improve Accessibility for Blind and Visually Impaired Passengers
Olympia, Wash. — Intercity Transit has launched a pilot program integrating NaviLens technology at the Olympia and Lacey Transit Centers. NaviLens provides wayfinding and information to blind and low-vision riders to help them navigate to bus bays. Using NaviLens, riders receive audio wayfinding information and real-time next bus departure details through their smartphone (Android or iOS). The technology supports 34 languages, enabling non-English speakers to more easily access transit in Thurston County.
NaviLens uses high-contrast, color-coded QR-style codes that can be scanned from up to 60 feet away using the NaviLens app. Unlike traditional QR codes, NaviLens codes do not require precise alignment or focus, allowing users to receive real-time guidance about their surroundings, transit schedules, and other essential information.
“Intercity Transit is committed to ensuring our services are accessible to everyone,” said Emily Bergkamp, General Manager of Intercity Transit. “By piloting NaviLens, we are taking another step forward in providing equitable and independent mobility solutions for all our riders.”
The pilot program includes NaviLens codes placed strategically throughout the Olympia and Lacey Transit Centers. Riders can download the free NaviLens app on their Apple or Android smartphones to interact with the codes and receive spoken directions, stop details, and other helpful transit information in multiple languages. Real-time departure information is also available for sighted users through the NaviLens Go app.
Intercity Transit is seeking rider feedback on the pilot to assess its effectiveness and determine potential future expansion. Riders are encouraged to share their experiences through the agency’s website, by emailing customerservice@intercitytransit.com, or by calling 360-786-1881.
